Counseling News & Info
ACT Review Dates/Registration
The Assistance League of Omaha annually holds ACT Test review classes at Westside High School in the days ahead of the actual test session.  Look for the file at the bottom of this page entitled "ACT Review-September and October" for details and a registration form.

PSAT To Be Given at PHS in October
Juniors who rank in the top 20% of their class will be invited to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) on Wednesday, October 13.  The PSAT good practice for college admissions tests like the SAT and the ACT and it allows students to compete for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying program.  One member of the Class of 2010 earned a large scholarship to a prestigious university as a result of her performance on the PSAT during her junior year!  All PHS sophomores and juniors are invited to register for and take the PSAT.  There is a $15 registration fee.  Invitations to select juniors and more information for all PHS sophomores and juniors will be distributed in September.  Students planning to test may be interested in taking a PSAT Review Course that is offered annually at Westside High School (see file below named "PSAT Review.")

2010-11 ACT Test Dates
The ACT will be offered during the current school year on October 23, December 11, February 12, April 9 and June 11.  A flyer with test dates and registration dates is posted at the bottom of this page.  All juniors and seniors will be given a flyer with information on how to register online for the ACT.  A paper registration packet can be requested from the Counselor's Office.  All seniors will be given an ACT prep booklet.  Underclassmen can request that booklet as well.  There are many resources available for preparing for the ACT, some free and some at a cost.  The Assistance League of Omaha offers a prep course at a reasonable cost.  Information on that course is available from and will be distributed by the Counselor's Office.

Leadership Opportunity for Sophomores!
Youth Leadership Omaha (YLO) is a leadership skills development opportunity for sophomores that is sponsored by Creighton University.  All sophomores are invited to apply for acceptance to this outstanding program that runs from November to April.  An informational letter can be found in the Counselor's Mailbag-Opportunities folder found on this page.  This year's YLO class will enjoy opening and closing retreats and six seminars.  Application deadline is September 17, 2010.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Changes ACT Score Policy
Beginning with students seeking admission in the fall of 2011, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) will only accept ACT scores reported directly from ACT, Inc.  That means that students considering enrolling at that school should be certain to include UNL on the list of score recipients during the ACT registration process.  Scores reported on an official high school transcript will not be sufficient for UNL's Office of Admission as they consider a student's admission application.  Contact Mr. Stanton with questions.
